STAC WINTER POSTSEASON TUTORIAL

Here is a guideline for how the STAC playoffs are determined for each winter sport.

(Please note that these are for STAC sports only. Indoor track is a Section IV sport only and does not have individual leagues such as STAC. Girls wrestling is also a Section IV sport only, but does hold a STAC Championship.)

STAC Divisions:
West – Corning, Elmira, Horseheads, Ithaca
Metro – Binghamton, Johnson City, Maine-Endwell, Union-Endicott, Vestal
Central – Chenango Forks, Chenango Valley, Owego, Seton, Waverly
East – Norwich, Oneonta, Susquehanna Valley, Windsor

(* Notes: Binghamton and Seton combine for wrestling and boys swimming and compete in the Metro. Norwich bowling competes in the MAC. Ithaca and Oneonta do not have bowling teams.)

For each sport, only STAC league games/matches count in determining division winners!

*** BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL ***

League games = Each team plays a division opponent two times, plus one crossover game vs. next division (West vs. Metro and Central vs. East). A West vs. East game, for example, would be considered non-league and count in overall standings for sectional points, but not in STAC league standings. Also, games vs. opponents in other conferences, such as the IAC or MAC, or vs. any other section or state, do not count for STAC league standings, but do go towards sectional points.

(* Note: Occasionally, a West vs. Metro and Central vs. East matchup will happen twice, but only one of them is considered a league game. This is determined in the schedule ahead of time. The other counts as a non-league game in the standings.)

# of League Games:
West – 11
Metro – 12
Central – 12
East – 11

How seeds for playoffs are determined:
Central/East 2nd seed (away team) at West/Metro 1st seed (home team)
West/Metro 2nd seed (away team) at Central/East 1st seed (home team)

The 1st seed is the better record between division winners in the West/Metro and Central/East. That team will host a home semi-final game vs. the team with the 2nd best record (2nd seed and away team) in the other half of the conference.

The two semi-final winners will meet in the championship on a neutral court.

Semi-finals: Wednesday, February 19 at top seeds
Championships: Friday, February 21 at Union-Endicott

*** BOYS AND GIRLS BOWLING ***

(This year, due to a lack of teams in the East division, Windsor and Susquehanna Valley have merged into the Central division. Also, Horseheads has a boys team, but does not have a girls team.)

League games = 2 games each vs. rest of division and 2 crossovers each West vs. Metro

# of League Games (Girls):
West – 12
Metro – 12
Central – 10

# of League Games (Boys):
West – 14
Metro – 14
Central – 10

All three division winners earn a berth.

Total pins for three games determine the overall STAC Champion.

(All other non-division winning STAC schools are invited to the End of Year Tournament. Both Tournaments are held simultaneously at Midway Lanes in Vestal.)

Championships: Monday, February 10 at Midway Lanes

*** BOYS WRESTLING ***

(Each team has one dual meet each vs. the rest of their division, with the top records declared division champions. However, no team championship is held between the four division champions. The STAC Championship is an individual meet where team scores are tabulated based on individual finishes, and an overall team winner is awarded.)

All scoring athletes entered into the STAC Varsity Wrestling Championship Tournament are to be seeded according to an objective adopted seeding criteria.

Win/Loss records from the current season are to be credited first, with Prestige Points for highest placement on the “Prestige Points Chart” to be added after.

1. A team may enter up to 20 athletes into the tournament as long as:
a. The weight doesn’t exceed 16 entrants total.
b. Most seed-able (higher points) athlete is entered based on bracket space availability.
c. Each STAC school is guaranteed one slot in each weight regardless of seeding potential.

Records Seeding: 3 points for a Win, -1 point for a loss (Varsity matches only)
Example:
Joe Smith is 10-2 this year.
He gets 30 points for wins MINUS 2 points for losses.
His record points = 28 points
Joe also took 6th in the NYS Tourney earning 85 prestige points.
Joe’s total seeding points: 28 + 85 = 113 points

PRESTIGE POINTS CHART:
Athletes only get credit for highest placement and only results from the previous season maybe used. All athletes with positive seeding points should be seeded with the rest of the tournament entries to be drawn in. Seeding is to be done strictly on a points-only basis, unless there is a dispute over seeds 1 and 2 whereas the coaches can vote.
NYS 1st – 120
NYS 2nd – 110
NYS 3rd – 100
NYS 4th – 95
NYS 5th – 90
NYS 6th – 85
Sect IV 1st – 75
Sect IV 2nd – 70
Sect IV 3rd/STAC 1st – 65
Sect IV 4th/STAC 2nd – 60
STAC 3rd – 55
STAC 4th – 50
STAC 5th – 45
STAC 6th – 40

Championships: Friday and Saturday, January 24 and 25 at Johnson City

*** GIRLS WRESTLING ***

Girls are pre-seeded based on the results from the Section IV Ranking Tournament. Like the boys, the overall team STAC Champions is awarded based on finishes at the STAC Championship. There are no division winners since girls wrestling is a Section IV sport only and not officially a STAC sport.

Championships: Friday and Saturday, January 24 and 25 at Johnson City

*** COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING ***

All STAC schools must compete at the competition if they have a team, where an overall STAC Champion will be crowned, along with 2nd and 3rd place.

The scores will then be compared per class to decide who moves onto their sectional championship.

Championship: Saturday, February 1 at Johnson City

*** BOYS SWIMMING & DIVING ***

(Each team has one dual meet each vs. rest of division and one dual meet each West vs. Metro, Central vs. East, with the top record declared division champions. However, no STAC Championship is held between the four division champions. Once the regular season ends, they go right into sectionals.)
